Background:
The UN Inter Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) believes that SSE holds considerable promise for addressing the economic, social and environmental objectives and integrated approaches inherent in the concept of sustainable development.  The task force responds to the concern that the process of crafting a post-2015 development agenda and set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has paid insufficient attention to the role of what is becoming increasingly known as the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE). SSE refers to the production of goods and services by a broad range of organizations and enterprises that have explicit social and often environmental objectives, and are guided by principles and practices of cooperation, solidarity, ethics and democratic self-management. The field of SSE includes cooperatives and other forms of social enterprise, self-help groups, community-based organizations, associations of informal economy workers, service-provisioning NGOs, solidarity finance schemes, amongst others. The task force also illustrates this potential by examining the role of SSE in selected issue areas which, it believes, are central to the challenge of socially sustainable development in the early 21st century. They include:
  • Transitioning from Informal Economy to Decent Work
  • Greening the Economy and Society
  • Local Economic Development
  • Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements
  • Women’s Well-Being and Empowerment
  • Food Security and Smallholder Empowerment
  • Universal Health Coverage
  • Transformative Finance
In addition to the above and also the Youth Statement adopted in UNESCO Aichi Nagoya Declaration 2014 on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the organizers have planned a Youth Forum for Social & Solidarity Economy, Peace and Urban Sustainability. The role of Youth Networks and consultations with various stakeholders including academia, research institutions and public policy organizations are becoming crucial for mitigating impact of Climate Change and to address the concerns in emerging social and environmental challenges. The proposed Youth Forum for Social & Solidarity Economy, Peace and Urban Sustainability is an effort in the direction to foster and advance advocacy, linkage and lobby with policy makers, implementers, corporate and media for developing sustainable solutions, green technology, alternative life style, behavior modification towards mitigating climate change.
